CARTHAGE - A 22-year-old Moore County man has been charged with making
nearly $50,000 in electronic withdrawals from the bank account of the clerk
of court.
Rocky Wayne Snelling, 22, 1085 Putnam Church Road, Carthage, was charged
with 25 counts of obtaining property by false pretenses and one count of
financial identity fraud. He was jailed under $100,000 bond pending a Jan.
20 court date.
Catherine Graham, clerk of the Moore County Superior Court, reported
Thursday that unauthorized electronic withdrawals totaling $49,936.60 had
been made on her office's account during December.
The 25 withdrawals were traced electronically to Snelling, who has prior
convictions - and pending charges - on other computer-related crimes, according
to Detective B. Whitaker of the Moore County Sheriff's Department. Snelling
was charged in 2004, Whitaker said, with making similar electronic withdrawals
involving a nursing home.
The detective said Snelling made the withdrawals after obtaining the
bank account number of the clerk's office.
"It's kind of easy, to be honest with you," Whitaker said.
"He's real intelligent when it comes to computers."
