Input on school leader sought

ASHEBORO - Input is now being sought from the community on what qualifications Randolph County Schools' next superintendent should have.

The public has two means to provide this input - through forms now available at locations throughout the county and at community meetings planned next month at each of the county's four high schools.

The search is now under way for a new superintendent who will replace retiring Superintendent Dr. Bob McRae who announced last September he would leave in June. Applications, due Feb. 15, have been sought since mid-December.

To assist in this search, the Randolph County Board of Education is seeking input from community citizens on the qualifications they consider important for the new superintendent.

Forms on which citizens can make comments have been placed at all Randolph County library branches, local chambers of commerce and schools.

Citizens can pick up a form, complete it and fax it to (336) 334-4093 or email their information to Dr. Frances Jones, who is assisting the board in its search. Jones' email address is ffjones@uncg.edu.

The forms or emails are due by Tuesday, Feb. 15.

Additionally, citizens and staff members can attend open community meetings to be held in each high school district.

All meetings will be held from 6:30-7:30 p.m. in the high school theaters according to the following schedule:

* Tuesday, Feb. 8 - Eastern Randolph High School.

* Thursday, Feb. 10 - Randleman High School.

* Tuesday, Feb. 15 - Southwestern Randolph High School.

* Thursday, Feb. 17 - Trinity High School.

Jones, who was selected in November to conduct the search for the school board, will compile the community input for the board's review. She also assisted the board four years ago when Worth Hatley retired.

The superintendent vacancy has been widely distributed throughout the state and information also provided to Virginia and South Carolina school officials.

The position has also been posted on statewide association websites - those of the N.C. School Administrators Association and the N.C. School Boards Association.

After the closing of the application process, the school board will start reviewing applications and begin interviewing top candidates in early March.

The school board wants to make a decision on the new superintendent by mid-April.
