Local schools campaign for tsunami relief effort

From staff reports

ASHEBORO - Local schools are conducting a variety of campaigns for the American Red Cross Tsunami Relief Fund.

Two schools with campaigns that will run through Monday are:

* Tabernacle Elementary School is sponsoring Pennies of Hope.

Pennies are being collected and stacked in a mountain shape in hopes of collecting 150,000 pennies (a penny for each lost loved one).

Students, staff and community members are encouraged to bring in pennies from their dresser, a jug or piggy bank.

"Let those pennies help those suffering and in need," said Tabernacle Principal Drew Maerz. "Our school just hopes to make a difference."

The pennies, along with other change, are already about 5 inches deep in one of the school's display cases. The campaign runs through Jan. 31, although the school will accept donations as long as they continue.

* Charles W. McCrary Elementary School has already raised $480 toward its $500 goal for its Tsunami Disaster Relief Campaign which began Jan. 10 and continues through Jan. 31.

The McCrary Student Council started the campaign by sponsoring a "Kiss the Pig" contest to raise the money.

The staff member with the most money donated will have to kiss a real live pig in front of the entire school, according to Cheryl E. Perkins, McCrary's technology specialist.

As of Tuesday, McCrary Principal Elizabeth Price had the most money, $239.41, donated on her behalf. Plans are to have the winner kiss a real live pig in front of the school on Friday, Feb. 4.
